Another of my velvet paintings this time on deepest imperial purple that has been stretched over a deep edge canvas.
Circles of metallic gold, bright scarlet, and blues surround a central 'seed' which hovers on the velvet. Bordered in copper gold. painted part in high gloss and contrasting mat makes the center of the painting rise, hover and vibrate on the bed of lush purple velvet. The central part of this painting is impasto in iridescent purples, blues and greens.
In the center Acrylic has been 'painted' with an iron nail to give a texture that juxtaposes with the different surfaces.A ring of mat black and a metallic sheen pale gold encircles the center.
I have used lush velvet that reflects light beautifully and pops and jars with the jagged nature of the mark making. The deep blue entices the viewer to look and then look closer to where the idea rests.
Juxtaposing very different surfaces and colors, I wanted the mark making to stand out, to interfere. I wanted the painting to be a like a scar, a blemish or wound upon the perfection of the velvet and to represent imperfection, and the often beautiful result that this can bring.
The marks have been applied, layer after layer with a brush and then by dragging an iron nail through the paint to make the marks and depth. The aggression and violence of some of the marks contrast with the more painterly smooth graduations.
