ORACLE Acrylic on Velvet over Canvas 60 x 60 x 4 cm

On a deep blue velvet I used different sizes and types of mark making with various tools to create the dragging and furrowed effects radiating out from the center. Inspired by the colours of Greece and the tales of Pythia, the famous Oracle of Delphi, the all seeing eye. These highly reflective and differing surfaces and accents make this painting vibrate and hover in different lighting, glimmering and sparkling when the light catches the different colours and textures.
The marks have been applied, layer after layer with a brush but also by dragging an iron nail and other implements through the paint to make the marks and depth. The aggression and violence of some of the marks contrast with the more painterly smooth graduations.
In my abstract painting I often use the paint like any other material, to obtain a surface a texture, a sculptural property, more than in a more traditional way, to represent. I like to work on different surfaces to evoke a particular feeling, association, or thought, such as velvet, rubber, vinyl, wood as well as canvas.
The constant round and round, check and recheck, over and over, undo and redo,...all build up into a mark, a stain, a moment in time such as occurs in nature.
