The painting behind this image:

I started this large and very time greedy painting in early 2020 and finally finished it just as the first full on lockdown came. Had I have know I don't think I would have stayed inside and in one position for so very long!

The title is a corruption from William Blake’s “Auguries of Innocence,” specifically the line "A Robin Redbreast in a cage puts all Heaven in a rage". The  poem consists of a series of paradoxes in which Blake juxtaposes innocence with evil and corruption. The word augury in the title means omen or token, and the robin is the poem’s first noted “augury of innocence.”

The robin’s song, personality, and countenance are such that Blake saw the act of putting one in a cage as not only an enraging violation but also as a profound perversion of holiness.

The full title for this painting is Would a Vulture in a Cage put all of Heaven in a Rage? By swapping Blake's robin with a vulture and placing a tiny robin below I was thinking about Beauty/Ugliness and the associated value that is placed on both and how this can influence the balance, are we influenced with ideas of physical beauty equaling goodness and purity, if so, what hope the vulture?

I wanted the painting to have a ominous dark fairy tale feel to it, full of omens and portents, dark woods and candlelit  castles, something that Rumplestiltskin may have one his wall?

The Cage is taken from a antique French design which I loved for its curves, follies and gold. I have altered it somewhat to create unwieldy, tilted, unbalanced and slightly off proportions.

I have included a few mock-ups of the print framed at different sizes and in various situations. This is a digital download file, frame and print is not included.

  • About this download

    About this digital download:

A link to the image will be sent immediately upon payment.

This is a large file at 300dpi which can print sharp up to H60 x 30cm 24 x 12 inch so will fit fine inside most standard paper sizes and frames with a border.

Although you can print on to any paper, I recommend an archival fine art paper if you intend to use as an art print. An excellent choice would be Hahnemeuhle rag paper in a satin or vellum finish. https://www.hahnemuehle.com/en/digital-fineart.html

Printing on paper between 200 and 300gms will work in most home printers and will give your print a firm place to fix. You can also use the image for a canvas, aluminium or other print.

The image is set at the ratio of a generic tarot card size apx H12 x 7cm H5 x W3" and keeps this ratio up to the largest size so there will always be a border to your print which you can crop as you wish. Please see image of print with border.
