III of SWORDS

This painting was based on the Rider Waite Coleman-Smith version of this card and depicts a fundamentally sorrowful experience— tarot readers suggest this may be in the form of a lost relationship, an accidental death, or some other form of not just depression or malaise but deeply emotional sorrow.

When the card appears "reversed" in a spread, this is not usually read as meaning the "opposite" of sorrow, but rather a sorrow that is somehow mitigated by its circumstances or that is not as bad as it could have been. It is among the most negative cards within the tarot deck.... Heartbreak, emotional pain, sorrow, grief, hurt

and reversed: Negative self-talk, releasing pain, optimism, forgiveness.

Three of Swords Description

I stuck closely to PCS's art with this card as I think it's a stricking portayel of sudden sorrow and grief. Still, I am excited to start making my own version of this card soon.

The Three of Swords shows a heart pierced by three swords, representing the pain inflicted by words, actions and intent on the emotional and physical self. The dark clouds gathering in the background mirror this pain but offer the hope that, just as the storm clouds will disappear, so too will the pain and hurt you are experiencing.

This painting was part of my original idea to create a pack as a homage to Artist Pamela Coleman Smith who's creative skill and interpretation of Arthur Waite's ideas, made the RWS pack what it has become today.....the most popular tarot pack in the world. I have included a few mock-ups of the print framed at different sizes and in various situations.

This work as created with Bombay Inks on H40 x W30 cm Ampersand Claybord. Both these materials are sublime to work with and after layer upon layer of painting they have a jewel, stained glass clarity to them.

I will be uploading all 12 images from my initial venture with the RWS homage. The original drawings will also be available to buy shortly. Read more about downloads below. I will be uploading a first work from my own ideas and interpretations of the cards soon

    • About this download

      About this digital download:

A link to the image (Max size H48 W28cms H19x W11" ) will be sent immediately upon payment.

This is a large file at 300dpi /36apx MB which can print sharp up to H48 x W28cms H19 x W11" so will fit fine inside most standard paper sizes and frames with a border.

Although you can print on to any paper, I recommend an archival fine art paper if you intend to use as an art print. An excellent choice would be Hahnemeuhle rag paper in a satin or vellum finish. https://www.hahnemuehle.com/en/digital-fineart.html

Printing on paper between 200 and 300gms will work in most home printers and will give your print a firm place to fix. You can also use the image for a canvas, aluminium or other print.

The image is set at the ratio of a generic tarot card size apx H12 x 7cm H5 x W3" and keeps this ratio up to the largest size so there will always be a border to your print which you can crop as you wish. Please see image of print with border.
