Another of my paintings in a circular theme, this one painted on teal velvet and stretched over a deep edge canvas.
Concentric rings of opalescent palest blue, silver grey, copper and gold working out from a bright metallic silver kernel in the centre. Surrounded by an almost liquid chain mail presence of reflective metallic silver pattering.
This work follows my fascination with the similarities that occur throughout the natural world as well as in metaphysics and quantum mechanics where the tiniest particle is part of and reflected in the structure of a universe or in a stone or pool of water.
On a human level, the painting offers up reflection on cause and effect.
I have used different sizes and types of mark making with various tools to create the dragging and furrowed effects radiating out from the centre.
These highly reflective and sometimes metallic paints with differing surfaces and accents make parts of this painting vibrate and hover in different lighting, glimmering and sparkling when the light catches the different colours and textures. The only part of the velvet left exposed is the teal ring.
The marks have been applied, layer after layer with a brush but also by dragging an iron nail and other implements through the paint to make the marks and depth. The aggression and violence of some of the marks contrast with the more painterly smooth graduations of paint and the blurred surface of the velvet..
In my abstract painting I often use the paint like any other material, to obtain a surface a texture, a sculptural property, more than in a more traditional way, to represent. I like to work on different surfaces to evoke a particular feeling, association, or thought, such as velvet, rubber, vinyl, wood as well as canvas.
This work can be hung easily gallery style, on two nails or you can use fixings if you choose (not supplied).
This work will be marked on the back with the following:
