Another velvet painting inspired by the coolours of the Mediteranian, which we could all do with in the UK right now.The painting catches different lighting on it's surface and plays with the eye as the depths seem to shift and blur

The gorgeous ultramarine velvet and thickly applied golds play with each other to create a bright painting with hidden depths at a perfect size. I wanted an antique look and feel to the work to invoke that feeling of antiquity and richness. This small painting carries a lot of weight!

The marks have been applied, layer after layer with a brush but also particulary in the raised center by dragging an iron nail and other implements through the paint to make the marks and depth. The aggression and violence of some of the marks contrast with the more painterly smooth graduations and the velvet surface. In my abstract paintings I often use the paint like any other material, to obtain a surface a texture, a sculptural property, more than in a more traditional way, to represent.

I like to work on different surfaces to evoke a particular feeling, association, or thought, such as velvet, rubber, vinyl, wood as well as canvas. The work is signed on the back in the following way:Freehand signature Text: Sand Laurenson MA(RADated: 2019Titled: LapisFixings not included. Please be utterly assured that the work will be packed safe and secure and we will be able to track it's progress to you at all times.
